When to Remove a Service Animal

  • The dog is out of control, and the person cannot get the dog under control. 
  • The dog is not housebroken. 


When Removing a Service Animal

1. Give handler time to gain control. 

Observe.  


2. Ask the handler to obtain control or remove the dog.

Be specific. Describe the behavior that needs to change.


3. If the handler is unable to get the animal under control, ask them to remove it.  Explain that they may come back without the animal today and you will 


Tips

Document a Service Animal Is Removed

Be specific.

  • Date and time
  • Staff person(s) involved
  • Customer name or if unknown description  
  • Description of the animal
  • Observed behavior that was not under the handler's control
  • Customer response (words/actions/time) to request to obtain control/leave 
  • Customer response to request to remove animal
